Although I initially wrote this off as a “low-budget limitation”, the game will usually subtly alter these rooms every time you see them. You’ll often see the same few rooms used again and again. Seriously, this game is a mixture of mind-melting psychedelic horror and gloomy “old mansion” horror □Īnother creepy thing this game does is to use repetition in a clever way. Instead, this game frightens and disturbs you in a much more subtle way. Yes, a small number of them genuinely caught me off-guard – but they are often so over-used and contrived that they quickly stop becoming scary. It is … dare I use that dreaded modern term?… an “experience”.Īs for the game’s horror elements, they consist of a mixture of psychological horror, jump scares, paranormal horror, jump scares, tragic horror, jump scares, creepy characters, jump scares, the uncanny, jump scares, creepy old paintings, jump scares etc… There are a lot of jump scares in this game, but they aren’t what makes it scary. Things might not always make complete sense, but this isn’t the point of the game. It’s the playable equivalent of an art-horror movie or an experimental novel. It’s a work of art, a creepy and twisted one, that just happens to be in videogame form. But this is a game that is more about mood and atmosphere than anything else. One of the first things that I will say about this game is that it was scarier than I’d initially expected. However, as he searches the house for art supplies, strange things start happening…Īlthough, to be fair, it wouldn’t be much of a horror game if they didn’t…. One masterpiece that will improve everything. But there’s one painting that he wants to make. He also drinks a lot and has been suffering from a creative block. Things haven’t gone well for him in the past, and he has alienated everyone around him. Set in the late 19th century, you play as a nameless American artist who returns to his empty mansion. The game itself has an EPILEPSY WARNING at the beginning too. This review may contain SPOILERS and DISTURBING IMAGES. Yes, there was a little bit of stutter occasionally and the framerate was probably about 20-30, but – given the slower pacing of the game – it was still very playable □ To my delight, even though my computer’s Intel HD 2500 integrated graphics seemed to be below the system requirements, the game actually ran reasonably well at lower settings. Since it had been reduced to about three quid, I decided to take a chance on it. Well, out of morbid curiosity, I decided to play a “walking simulator” horror game called “Layers Of Fear” (2016).Įven though I’m usually cynical about this style of horror game, the level of acclaim this game got and the hilariously melodramatic “ watch the presenter scream theatrically every two minutes” Let’s Play videos I’ve seen of it over the years eventually made me curious about actually playing it myself.Īlthough I missed this game during the Halloween sale on GOG last October, I was pleasantly surprised to see that a discounted DRM-free copy of it showed up in a later sale during early-mid November.
